Update from Tuesday 27 December at 2pm

Christchurch experienced two major earthquakes on Friday 23 December, and a series of smaller aftershocks have followed.

There were no serious injuries.
There has been some liquefaction in parts of the eastern suburbs of Christchurch, but all major roads and bridges are operational.
Most shopping malls including Re:Start Cashel Mall in the city, supermarkets and petrol stations are all open.
Christchurch International Airport is open and fully operational.
There is plenty of commercial accommodation available in the city and region.
Christchurch i-SITE Visitor Centre is open. It is located in a new building beside the Botanic Gardens on Rolleston Avenue (next to the Canterbury Museum).
Phone: +64 3 379 9629. Toll free: 0800 4 237 83 – NZ only
Open from 8.30 am – 5pm seven days a week.
The message from local tourism operators is that they are operating on a ‘safety first’ policy, so if they are open then it is safe for visitors.
Visitor information will be updated regularly on Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism’s website www.christchurchnz.com and www.tourismnewzealand.com

Useful Websites

For detailed up to date status reports on individual operators please look at www.christchurchnz.com
Regular tourism updates will also be carried on www.newzealand.com/earthquake
